"Fullerene Forest" in Northern Winter

The C60 Fullerene exhibits not only some unique physical and chemical properties which made it the molecule of the year, it can also show some crystal patterns. This Fullerene crystal graph was made by depositing a thin layer of C60 film (about 150 nanometer) on a quartz window in a vacuum chamber, a Kr ion laser was used to irradiate the film till a clear crystal pattern could be seen under a microscope. The picture was taken with a Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope with a 100X objective. False colour is applied to the image. Each "Fullerenes tree" is about 100 micrometer tall.
